Jiu-Jitsu above 50s

The humbling and inspiring BJJ Journey of Jeff Carlson, a San Clemente resident and business owner.

For the past several years, I have been wanting to get back into martial arts as it had been since high school but I wanted someone to do it with.  As it turns out Nick suggested we take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

I called a few places then Coach Felipe Guedes answered. It was a done deal.  I had received a call earlier that day from a  Brazilian guy I took scuba lessons from in Thailand and then not 30 minutes later I was talking to Felipe. 2 Brazilians in one day it must have been meant to be!  I mean come on have you ever met a Brazilian that wasn’t really nice and just fun to be around?  Probably not!

I was so tired of going to the gym and lifting weights and running on that Stairmaster to keep in shape, I was not always looking forward to working out.  With BJJ it is so much different.  I really enjoy coming to class, as a guy I guess I just love the sparring and that it is a contact sport but past that it really is an unbelievable workout.

I lost 25 pounds in 3-4 months and it is still gone as I keep trimming down.  Additionally I have made so many new friends it really is awesome and fun.  Working out in a gym is only fun if you have a workout partner, with BJJ you have like 20 sparring partners or more!

For about twice as much as a good gym membership you can work out with instructors 7 days a week.  You would pay thousands for personal training at any gym.  It does not replace going to the gym but complements it is a huge way.

I keep thinking about what is so special about Gracie Barra San Clemente and t

he first thing that comes to mind is Professor Flavio - We have a world champion, a world class fighter for our head instructor unlike probably many other schools. When I started we had Coach Felipe, Coach Charles and Coach Kanai who were all unbelievably encouraging as well as knowledgeable instructors that cared for our personal development as a student and a person. Now we also have Professor Marcelo, Coaches Scott, Chris, Frankie, Dave, Vivi, Angie wow we have so many talented coaches. Sorry if I missed anyone.

When I started in July 2009 I was 49 years old and still suffering from a skull fracture years prior.  Let’s say I had my doubts.  Am I too old for this?  What about my head injury?  Remembering things was pretty much nonexistent with me unless I write everything down and study it a hundred times.  Well BJJ training has helped me gain much confidence that my brain actually is working and that you can do anything you desire if you try hard enough and do not give up.  Sometimes I ask the coaches why didn’t you show me that technique and he tells me “I did jeff it was in the fundamentals class” oh well, I will keep pressing on.

My journey to Blue Belt was rougher than most I would say. I had to overcome a few injuries but at the same I received so much encouragement and support from the instructors and senior students, even the kids, that I just kept moving.  So while I could not train I came to class anyways with my bandages and just watched and then soon I would come and help out with the kids classes or fundamentals in any way I could, then gradually back into training and I am about 80% there now training as much as I can.

With all that said I want to encourage anyone who feels they cannot do something or someone who was training and got hurt and is now not training to push on and not give up!  Many including my friends, family and doctor have told me to give up BJJ and that my shoulder would never be the same.  Well, I am proving them wrong. I do not take the credit myself, I give credit to my Lord Jesus Christ as He is the who has given me the strength and has used GB San Clemente to help me in ways I am so thankful for to reach goals I would never think possible.

Training Jiujitsu has given me a big dream, I really love helping others reach their potential. Remember, small dreams have small struggles and small victories, but big dreams have big struggles but BIG victories!  Someday I will quit my consulting job and have my own school!  Yes a big dream! How sweet it will be.

If you want to get healthier, live not only longer but better, enjoy life to its fullest, gain self-confidence, make new friends, reach goals you never dreamed possible, and help others along the way and have a great time while doing it, I would say why are you not signed up already?

Nothing gives you a sense of pride or confidence like exercise. You can have a nice house, car, money or fame. Those things are desirable for all of us but they don't give you the natural high that exercise can. In fact, it's rolling on the mats and finally feeling like I understand a particular move or technique that translates to confidence off the mat. For reasons that I can't quite explain, taking an hour out of my day to train helps me deal with day to day stress more easily. It helps me put things in perspective.

I love San Clemente and I hate leaving it. I love the fact that I can train less than 2 miles from my house. I think the people I train with everyday leave an imprint on my technique. They flavor how I roll. They also know my moves so it makes it more important for me to be better technically. Also, my professors and coaches know me, and they have seen me grow. Sometimes it feels uncomfortable to try a new game, but not when they are around, because they were there when I didn't know what an arm bar was. There's no place like home.

BJJ has helped me in other areas of my life but I can't really give an example. It doesn't make you smarter, faster, taller or better looking (as if.....). BJJ doesn't change who you are, but it changes your attitude and your perspective. It makes you take new stock in what your assets are, whether that be on the mats or on the job, and helps you go forward with more focus and confidence.

My suggestion to someone who is considering training at Gracie Barra San Clemente is just get on the mats. You can't explain what the mats have to offer; you can only feel it. It is an experience like no other, and I suspect it's a different experience for different people. Just get on the mats and see for yourself. It's easy to come up with reasons not to join. But you didn't walk in the door looking for easy, did you?

I’d been a soccer player my whole life, but the closer I got to age 30 the less fun I had with the sport. I wasn’t getting any better, many old injuries plagued body when playing, and frankly it wasn’t much fun anymore. When it comes to martial arts I would say that I never really gave it much thought. On occasion, I’d watch an MMA event on TV and someone who knew something about Jiu Jitsu would comment on some of the positions, but I never really got it. Then GB San Clemente opened up near work, and I thought I’d give it a try. The rest, as they say, is history.

It didn’t take long to get hooked. I fell in love the mechanics of the art right away. Every class was an opportunity to learn something new: using leverage, finding balance, setting up an attack. I hadn’t had so much fun learning something new since I was 5 years old. It became clear very quickly that BJJ was about much more than the physical sport, and that’s when things really got exciting and my life started to change.

I have a very stressful job. Before BJJ, I got by in uncomfortable situations, but was typically very anxious during and afterward. BJJ has taught me not only to find peace of mind when under stress, but to excel under it. There is a tremendous peace that comes from the practice of finding calm, even when someone bigger, stronger, or meaner than you is doing everything they can to beat you. I’m well on my way to mastery of this skill through training and competing in tournaments.

What’s more is that the people of GB San Clemente are the warmest and most disarming people you’re ever likely to meet. Most of it flows directly from professor Flavio, his charisma, and his humble expertise. They have attracted many like minded people to the school and it makes for a great place to train. I’ve already introduced my wife to the sport, and although we are just getting started with family, I plan to offer BJJ to my kids as a way to supplement other sports in the hope that they can learn something from everything BJJ has to offer.

I’ve told everyone I’m close to about how much I love BJJ. Many of them have seen me change since I started two and a half years ago. If anything I’ve said resonates with you, then I think you owe it to yourself to give it a try, and there’s no better place to do it than under professor Flavio at GB San Clemente. Hopefully I’ll see you on the mats

I have always enjoyed being in good shape and being healthy, but I had allowed myself to get overweight and out of shape.  Then a friend suggested I come up to observe a class he was taking in BJJ.  I did my Intro with Coach Felipe the next day and that's all it took, I was hooked.

Why I enjoy coming to class is, going to class for me is the part of my day I look foword to every day, not only for the physical workout, but what I get out of it mentally is at least 50% of it.  I leave the world at the door from the time I walk in to train, and when I come off the mat, I am much better able to deal with work, family, life in general.

Over the years I have trained in other systems.  The simple answer to what is special about Gracie BJJ is the people and the way the staff run the classes. The first day I went to class, I had barely made it through the door when at least three people shook my hand and introduced themselves to me.  On the mat I quickly was made very comfortable by the other students by what I call the "I'd rather teach you than beat you" attitude.  That is somthing I've never felt in any other system.

Gracie BJJ has become more of a lifestyle for me, so to say it has helped me in other parts of my life would fall a little short.  For example, my diet is hugely better; my sleep is better; my attitude in general is better; my patience is better.

To anyone that is even considering coming to our school, I would say, give it a shot, regardless of age or physical condition.  It's not just a bunch of guys training for the UFC, although you can do that to if that's want you want.   We have all types of people there.  I'm 48, I have a 28-year-old son, a 16-year-old son, and three grandsons that train.  My wife and daughter have come in for special classes, as well as coming to the competitions  to support me.  Gracie makes a big effort to involve family on the mat and off the mat with events.  It is very much a family-friendly place.

This is the best martial arts discipline I have ever been involved with. I'm glad I took up BJJ and really made a great decision with Gracie Barra here at Irvine just of the I-5. Thanks to all the instructors for their help. It's great.
When I first joined it was just for fitness, now it's part of my lifestyle. I've lost around 20 pounds and my conditioning is the same as when I was twenty. All my family are involved now - 2 daughters doing really well withing the sport. Looking back taking up Gracie Barra BJJ was one of the best decisions I've ever made :)
