On September 7, 2010, we are graduating a new Coach: our dear Assistant Instructor Francis!

He’s receiving his Coach patch from Professor Flavio after completing the GB Instructors Program and dedicating so many hours helping and teaching the kids and Juniors on the mats.

Come celebrate with us and support our new Coach. Great job Francis!

Labor Day Holiday Closure!

Testimonial for Gracie Barra Dana Point:

We’ve tried several other martial arts schools, including Kung-fu, Taekwondo, Karate, and another Jiu-Jitsu school. None have been more helpful and enjoyable for our kids than the Gracie Barra Dana Point school. One of the best things we like about this school is the excellent organization of the program. This school is run like an actual educational institution. There are several classes, so that our kids can train most of the days. The program structure is very well thought out so that the kids learn all the necessary techniques with proper progression. Our experience with other martial arts school is that the beginning students are quite behind and have a difficult time catching up. However, at this school the program is designed in such a way that the white belts can feel comfortable with the pace of the class where there are other more advanced students. Another good thing is that there is a main instructor/coach that teaches the kids the techniques and there are several assistants that make sure the kids are doing the techniques correctly. The teacher/student ratio is great.

Another aspect of this school that we like is that the kids start grappling on day one. There are no fancy moves to master for months before they can start practicing what they’ve learned that day in a competition or real life situation. There are no learning to kick, roll, and fall for months before they start using what they’ve learned right away. When we came for our first class, we were a little concerned that the kids were going to be “wrestling” on their first day, but we were happy to see that all the partners that our boys were paired with were instructed to show our boys how to apply the techniques that had just been taught. All the kids are young, very energetic boys and girls, but none of them took advantage of the new kids. There is a definite sense of discipline, self control, and willingness to help among the kids in the school-it’s quite amazing to watch all the kids train with each other in the dojo (studio).

Gracie Barra, Dana Point, has given our whole family a fun way to bond and gain some exercise! Our 2 boys (10 and 7) started Jiu-Jitsu in December, and we’ve seen a huge improvement in self esteem, flexibility, strength, and muscle tone!

Tommy, our youngest, joined our family in January of 2010 and within the first week we had him in Jiu-Jitsu classes. It was a great way to bond with his brothers, as well as make new friends. It also helped him to gain discipline in controlling his anger and provide an outlet for his energy.

Since we’re web designers, we sit most of the day and our sedentary lifestyle was catching up to us. We saw how much fun the boys had at Jiu-Jitsu, and decided to join. Now we have fun training as a family at the dojo and at home! We’ve seen an improvement in our energy levels and our connection with the kids. Plus, the friends we’ve made at Jiu-Jitsu and connections to the Dana Point community are invaluable. Coach Kanai, Coach Felipe, Professor Marcelo, Coach Vivi, Professor Fabiana, and Coach Charles are a big part of our family dinner time conversations.

When we were ready to get the kids to start a martial art we decided to have them do the thing that was most hyped up by Hollywood and talked about in the media-Karate. Believe it or not, the boys got bored with Karate! We’re so glad we switched to the less talked about-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after years of trial and error with other systems. Even after training for over 7 months, almost on a daily basis, the kids still say ‘Yippee!’ when it’s time to change into their uniforms for Jiu-Jitsu!

Dorje, age 10: “I like to go to Gracie Barra because I like to learn self defense, it’s a great exercise, and it feels like a game. Every time I get a new stripe, I feel like I’m getting a ‘level-up’ in the game. My favorite part of the class is specific training because we can use what we’re learning!”

Nirvan, age 7: “I like Jiu-Jitsu because I like learning all the new moves like the key-lock, the triangle, and all the arm-bars. Plus, Jiu-Jitsu helps you to protect your friends and family.”

Tommy, age 6: “I like Jiu-Jitsu because it’s fun!”

Jiu-Jitsu class for Camp Pendleton Marines

Gracie Barra San Clemente and Gracie Barra Dana Point have made it their business to go to the Camp Pendleton Marine Base in Oceanside to train the Marines in Jiu-Jitsu. The marines love it so much, they’ve received approval to have them come on base regularly to teach classes as a part of their overall combat curriculum.

Recently, GB standouts, Kayron Gracie, Otavio Sousa, Fabiana Borges, Marcelo Lacerda Brandao, Rodrigo Simoes, Lucas Rocha, Ronis Gracie, and the rest of the GBSC/GBDP staff went to the base to present a Jiu-Jitsu class to the Marines. It was the first time these GB professors and coaches had been on a military base and they were excited about the opportunity. The Marines were blown away by the level of skill and precision these Jiu-Jitsu greats brought to their community.

Kayron Gracie led the class and had a great time doing it. “We got there in the morning at around 10:00,” he says, “Coach Felipe (Guedes) and Coach Charles (Gomes) put them through an hour of physical drills and conditioning,” he says, “Then Professor Otavio, Professor Marcelo, and I taught them some Jiu-Jitsu techniques that were geared more towards the type of self-defense situations they would normally be presented with during combat.”

At the end of the class, the professors and coaches sparred with the Marines. Then as a special surprise, the Marines taught the GB participants a little bit about their combat training. Ronis Gracie was awed by the Marines’ dedication and commitment to training. “I think the most impressive thing I saw was their focus and seriousness during training,” he says, “I can see why these guys are so important to the country and why the U.S. is the strongest country in the world.”

Black belt Fabiana Borges said it was amazing to see how hard the Marines trained and how disciplined they were in class, realizing that they do it to get ready for war. “The experience changed my life,” she says, “It made me want to go back to the mats and demand more of myself as a professor and an athlete. They inspired me to train harder and teach better. We were teaching them Jiu-Jitsu techniques so they can protect themselves while they’re protecting our country. That gave more value to my art and made me expect more from myself.”

At the end of the training session, the Marines gave the professors and coaches certificates as a gesture of respect and gratitude. Fabiana said she felt a lot of pride at that moment. “I was proud to see how they respected and admired our martial art. It was a good feeling knowing that they might be able to use a little bit of the Jiu-Jitsu we taught them to protect themselves while they are so fearlessly defending the country.”

September 11th GBSC/GBDP Soccer Game!!

The Soccer Cup Challenge is Here Again!

This is our 3rd Soccer Cup Challenge, but this time we’re adding a little more fun and competition to the mix! At this time, GB Encinitas and GB Huntington Beach have agreed to join us and will also be competing for the championship!

In the past, we’ve just played around and the “red team” or the “blue team” won. This time, it’s based on school participation, so make sure you come and represent your school!

Sign up sheets for the exciting Soccer Cup Challenge will be at GBSC or GBDP! Please make sure you sign up for yourself and your kids, so we can create teams for both!

Here are the details:

What: Soccer Cup Challenge

When: September 11, 2010

Where: Foster Ranch Park in San Clemente (the field with the track around it)

Time: Starting at 3pm.

Schedule:

3:00 to 3:15: Kids team organization
3:30 to 4:00: Kids Game + Adult team organization
3:30 to 4:30: 1st Adult Game: GB Dana Point Vs. GB San Clemente
4:30 to 5:30: 2nd Adult Game: GB Encinitas Vs. GB Huntigton
5:30 to 6:30: Final Match

After Game Dinner and Get Together: 8:00 p.m. Details and Information to follow!
