By Dr. Steve Culen: Why Private Lessons?

I have taken privates for 3 months.  I had no confidence on the mats mostly because it was hard to take individual moves that i learned and put them together into a ‘battle plan.’  My moves seemed so basic and lacking in ‘style and awe factor.’  When you build a home, the garage floor may seem empty.  Lots of empty space and supports that lack, well, style and awe factor.  But when you see the second floor, and the third; you understand why the garage had to be that way, and it becomes that much more important. My private lessons do just that, give me a look at what is to come so I can see how my ‘lowly white belt’ training will make me a better competitor.  My private lessons have given me a look at the second floor.  In fact they have taught me that if the garage is strong enough, there is no limit to how many floors I can build above it.

Big day for Professor Renato “Babalu” Sobral

Big day for Professor Renato “BabaluSobral

This upcoming Saturday the Gracie Barra Cerritos Head Instructor Renato “BabaluSobral will have one of the biggest challenges of his career, he is facing Thierry Sokoudjou. For sure our thoughts will be with “Babalu” on Saturday night and many of us will be on the Honda Center cheering for him.

Hey Babalu,

Do your best. Fight hard and make us proud like you always do. Repeating your own words on the pre fight interview, we want you to enjoy every moment on that ring Saturday night. Your dedication, hard work and love for the sport are a great inspiration and to us you will be always the Champ.

Thanks for being a great role model for Gracie Barra.

By Dave Weber: Why Private Lessons?

After attending a few group classes with Prof. Almeida, I knew I wanted to start training private lessons with him.  If you’re contemplating doing private classes – do it!  How often do you get to train one on one with a black belt that has the incredible credentials of Prof. Almeida?

More importantly, he’s as good of a teacher as he is a practitioner.  I recently signed up for my 3rd round of private lessons (10 classes each round), and I don’t see myself stopping them anytime soon.

When you begin, Prof. will evaluate your game and create a specialized plan for each lesson.  For me, I always felt more comfortable with my top game because of my wrestling background, so, of course, we’ve been working hard on my bottom game.  I’m so much more confident on the bottom now, and even find myself pulling to half guard often – something I never would have done a year ago.

Whenever I do well in group class live training, I forget about it by the time I get home, but when someone gives me trouble, or I’m in an unfamiliar position, it always sticks with me, which is great because I can bring my questions to my privates with Prof., and we work to resolve the issues.

If you’re serious about Jiu Jitsu and want to elevate your game, it’s worth every penny.  I have a private this afternoon, and I can’t wait!

Why Jiu-Jitsu?

Last December our head instructor Professor Flavio Almeida went to Brazil to spend time with his family. While there he was invited to make a presentation to the American Embassy to explain better to consuls what is the gentle art and why and how it is growing so fats in the US and world wide.

Professor made an interesting presentation about the history of BJJ and where it is going as a sport and activity that changes people’s lives for better.

To illustrate his arguments, professor used a video prepared by Coach Felipe Guedes specially for the occasion. On this video you will see many great testimonials from GB San Clemente students sharing how BJJ has improved their lifestyle.

Find below some pictures from the presentation at the US Embassy i Rio De Janeiro Brazil.
