Students Appreciation Day

What a success! More then 50 people showed up for the I Gracie Barra San Clemente Students Appreciation Day. The class was very intense and exciting as Professor Flavio managed to make a good blend between a presentation about the origins and philosophy of Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, together with the practice of techniques used to illustrate some of his arguments.

The students were all excited to understand better many aspects of the Gentle Art. Most of us did not know the Phases of Combat self defense strategy (Strike/Clinch/Ground) was created by Mitsuyo Maeda, the Japanese who taught Ju-Jitsu to Carlos Gracie Sr. Or that the Japanese word Jiu is actually a bad translation of the Japanese word Ju (Gentle, Soft). Or that the development of the open guard is attributed in big part to Rolls Gracie, who passed away at the age of 32 on a hang glide accident.

It was great to see how much we are all connected to the legacy of the Gracie family and to realize that we actually Keeping their legacy alive by the practice of Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Gracie Barra: Keeping the Legacy Alive!

Nice Black Belt Promotion Ceremony

Nice Black Belt Promotion Ceremony

The School was wall to wall with students, Master Carlos Gracie Jr and 6 Gracie Barra Black Belts. Master Carlos Gracie Jr. showed us some coll attacks from the closed guard, rolled with the students and towards the end of the sparring session called everyone to the promotions time.

As the Gracie Barra tradition says each new Gracie Barra Black Belt had to make a speech to share experiences and thoughts about their journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

No doubt is was a day to remember. We would like to sincerely thank Master Carlos Gracie Jr. for dedicating his entire life to Gracie Barra and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, otherwise this amazing ceremony would not be possible.

Also congratulations for the recently promoted Gracie Barra Black Belts:

Alex Hisiung
Fabio Villela
Magid Hage
Rafael “Mosquito”
Renato “Babalu” Sobral

Remember: “The Black Belt is a white belt who never quit.”

We are gathering more pictures from the promotions, soon it will be posted here.
